Linguistics Stitchery and other inside jokes at the KTF Post:
Frog asked me to explain the “what new threads are you weaving today?” comment from my post.
A thread can be described in terms of email. The trail of responses and the branching off from one email can be called a thread. In other words there is a single reference through the emails that connects them all together. When the weaving begins is when responses to one email begin to branch off on subtopics to the main topic or requested response. From one view point it looks like a mess, but another viewpoint is a woven fabric. Especially when people who never knew each other begin to contact each other based on the one email that started it all. Trailing a thread or weave can lead you to a culprit. It can lead you to the real information that conveniently got cut out in the first place.
Threads are the sign of a popular topic. Or in the least one that is important to several people. For instance: follow the comment trail of an email that starts in the CIO’s office and is sent off one by one down the corporate ladder. See what happens. In a way its like playing an electronic version of “grapevine”… How what you say can change radically by the eighth person around the circle. At the fifteenth person, what they comment on has nothing to do with how you started the game.
